2016 Winner Feature: Michele Harakel-Henifin – Installed by Lyon Sheet Metal

LyoLyonn Sheet Metal & Heating of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota selected Michele Harakel-Henifin from Little Falls, Minnesota, as their 2016 Bryant Community Heroes winner. Michele is a passionate individual who has dedicated time and resources to ensuring elderly patients have a voice when it comes to their own care. Below is the nomination that led Lyon’s panel to select Michele as their 2016 Community Heroes recipient:

“Michele works as a Activities Director at Horizon Health (Harmony House of Brainerd). She works with residents with Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory loss in a assisted living facility. She has been trained in person centered care (looking at how the clients wish to be cared for–example–helping them brush their teeth, most CNA’s are trained to use cold water to rinse, Well some with sensitive teeth may prefer warm water). She is also the one of very few people in the state to be certified as a trainer in Teepa Snow’s “Positive Approach to Care” training, a nationally recognized training on how to connect with clients with Dementia. She has been the Vice-President and President of the Statewide Activities Professionals Association Region 5 and was recently named the Vice- President statewide. Michele gives presentations and training to facilities throughout the state on how to care for people with Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and memory loss. She also helps families having difficulties in these areas as well. She has implemented the “caring doll” program at her facilities. A realistic doll that helps people with dementia. Her caring, respect, and dedication to caring for the elderly is astounding. She gives the elderly suffering from memory loss a more full life and a voice, which is her passion. Her dream is to have all facilities in the state to institute a program that gives the elderly their own voice in how they are cared for. For these reasons and for many others I nominate her for the Community Hero award.”
