River City Heating chose Kathy Rollinger of Minnesota City, MN as their 2016 Bryant Community Heroes winner. Kathy was nominated by her daughter for her dedication to the Winona community through volunteerism. “I have nominated my mom as my hero because she has brought me to realize with the many examples she has set that if you put your heart and mind into something you are passionate about you can achieve anything and that you CAN make a difference in this world no matter how big or small.”
I nominate my mom, Kathy Rollinger as my hero. My mom has instilled in me the thought of “Service above self” by the idea of giving back to your community and being one with it. She has led us, my brother, sister, and I by example with involving us in events she was involved in. For instance, back when my sister and I were in grade school she volunteered for the Rollingstone Elementary PTA as a member and treasurer for two years and brought us along to help with auctions they held for the school. I was eventually asked if I could watch the kids when they were in their meetings and with my mom encouraging me, I took the offer and kept the kids busy so that they could plan all the important things that the PTA planned and funded. This taught me that even helping out in the slightest way could make a difference.
Soon after my mom joined Winona Rotary and became secretary there for a good amount of time. She brought us to meetings so we could experience what it was like to be apart of something like that where they help the community and expand their knowledge of it. Some days it was boring to my young mind but looking back on it it was a very intriguing thing to me and one day I aspire to be a fellow Rotarian and give back to my community the way my mom does. Twice we actually hosted exchange students so that we could experience other cultures outside of our little community that is Winona. Because of this I became very interested in traveling the world to just experience in person how everybody else interacts with the environment and gain knowledge of how the world works in different parts of it.
A year or two later my mom started her own business as a QuickBooks consultant. Since she was her own business she thought of the idea of doing Feed My Starving Children with a team of people whom she gathered in order to do it. My brother, sister, and I all volunteered to do this in the group with my mom because we wanted to help all of the children and adults around the world who are not as fortunate as others like us who can afford clothes, a car, a place to live, or even food. We packaged over 100,000 Manni Packs to ship to third world countries such as Timor-Leste and Somalia. We all felt amazing after packing this many because it made us feel like we can actually make a difference which I’ve learned is always true.
I have nominated my mom as my hero because she has brought me to realize with the many examples she has set that if you put your heart and mind into something you are passionate about you can achieve anything and that you CAN make a difference in this world no matter how big or small.
